Hello Sourfusion,
I'm fifteen and like any other teen, I like makeup. I don't know if this is true or not, but some people say my makeup looks fake+cakey... I dont want to look like that. I wear eyeliner,  mascara, eyeshadow, powder and foundation. Can you help me?
- - Covering up in Miami.

Dear "Covering up",
We all tend to go over-board with makeup sometimes. But its definitely not a good thing. The most common cause for "cakey-ness" is foundation;
  • Foundation should not be more than 2 tones lighter and darker than your natural skin color, it looks extremely fake, and obvious.
  • Do not apply a thick layer of foundation, it usually "crusts up" on the surface of your skin.
Sometimes, it can still give you a fake look. It is best to avoid foundation completely. I know, we all break out in pimples at this age... your best bet is to grab some concealer that is the same colour as you skin and dab a little bit on the affected areas to hide it.
Another common culprit is the eye-shadow. Colors like blue, purple, green and pink tend to look really trashy if you cant pull it off. And school isnt the best place for those colors. They go better on special occassions. Although, simple colors like silver, black, brown, etc. are always attractive ;P
Mascara is usually fine, but some people dont know know how to use it right and tend to mess around with it. Also, check your mascara... depending on the brand, age, etc. is can make your lashes look clumpy, "EW!".
& as long as you aren't going crazy with eyeliner and doing it right, its all good. Make sure you use primer before the eyeliner to stay safe from smudging disasters.

You'll Need:
  • Foundation or Powder
  • Primer
  • Kohl/Pencil Liner
  • Eyeshadow [Black; for a bolder look use brightly colored eyeshadow]
  • Nude Lipstick
  • Clear Lip Gloss
  • False Eyelashes
  • Q-tip or wedge sponge
Instructions:
  1. Wear a pale-ish foundation or powder
  2. Use primer [or a translucent powder] on your eyelids and near your lower lashline.
  3. Next, grab your kohl/pencil liner and color in your upper and lower water-line and all around your eye, including the corners.
  4. Wipe off any access eyeliner, you don't want too much, you'll be wearing liquid liner too.
  5. Apply black or colored eyeshadow on your eyelids to intensify your eyeliner. Do this to your lower lashline, if desired. Make sure you use only a tad bit. Put an appropriate amount according to look you are aiming for. If your using colored, you can also experiment with more than one color.
  6. Blend your eyeshadow with an eyeshadow brush or q-tip.
  7. Take your liquid liner and draw a smooth line across your upper and lower lashlines. If you wish, wing it out to add a more exotic look.
  8. Apply your falsies, glue them well, you dont want your lashes falling off.
  9. You are done with the eyes. Get some lipgloss, make sure it is not too bright. Nude, translucent and light pink are good colors. Gently kiss a tissue paper to remove any access gloss ;]
