Makeup Advice: 9/16

 Hello Sourfusion,
I'm fifteen and like any other teen, I like makeup. I don't know if this is true or not, but some people say my makeup looks fake+cakey... I dont want to look like that. I wear eyeliner,  mascara, eyeshadow, powder and foundation. Can you help me?

Dear "Covering up",
We all tend to go over-board with makeup sometimes. But its definitely not a good thing. The most common cause for "cakey-ness" is foundation;
  • Foundation should not be more than 2 tones lighter and darker than your natural skin color, it looks extremely fake, and obvious.
  • Do not apply a thick layer of foundation, it usually "crusts up" on the surface of your skin.
Sometimes, it can still give you a fake look. It is best to avoid foundation completely. I know, we all break out in pimples at this age... your best bet is to grab some concealer that is the same colour as you skin and dab a little bit on the affected areas to hide it.
Another common culprit is the eye-shadow. Colors like blue, purple, green and pink tend to look really trashy if you cant pull it off. And school isnt the best place for those colors. They go better on special occassions. Although, simple colors like silver, black, brown, etc. are always attractive ;P
Mascara is usually fine, but some people dont know know how to use it right and tend to mess around with it. Also, check your mascara... depending on the brand, age, etc. is can make your lashes look clumpy, "EW!".
& as long as you aren't going crazy with eyeliner and doing it right, its all good. Make sure you use primer before the eyeliner to stay safe from smudging disasters.
